MODELLING AND ANIMATING THE CAT. The cat is modelled using a 3D design application and rigged with virtual bones or skeleton for animation. It's then textured using a painted image of the cat which is then mapped onto the mesh like a giant tattoo.
MODELLING THE SKATEBOARD.Every detail of the skateboard is painstakingly recreated - even if it appears for just several seconds at a time.
FROM REAL WORLD TO VIRTUAL.The video camera that took the footage is converted into a virtual camera that is then placed in a 3D application where the animated cat and original footage are matched together.
Here you can see the virtual camera following the animated cat on a path.
Perhaps the most important stage of production is live action shooting. Bringing everyone together even for a little movie was a major challenge, and you only get one chance to get it right - or you can call everyone back again! This almost happened when we had a corrupted tape on the final day of shooting. Imagine the tape as film with sprocket holes down the side of it that regulates the playback speed. A digital version of those sprocket holes mysteriously got damaged. Luckily we found a specialist who was able to rescue it, saving a reshoot.
